I transitioned from a nonprofit to the corporate world and was making half of what I make now.

Marketing Manager // $93,000 // San Francisco The best thing I did before negotiating was looking for insights and inside information through people, not google. I didn’t just connect over coffee with people, I came with a specific agenda and shared what I had to offer. I always ended my connections with “I see you know _____, could you help make an intro?” Then finally, “What can I do to help you?” - This coffee connecting technique game me information that I couldn’t google that helped me in a strategic way. I became confident with my interviews and more importantly, was happy to ask for a salary that was right for me.

Congratulations!! I was advised early in my career that I'd be able to transition from corporate to nonprofit, but not the other way around - unfortunately it scared me into a field I didn't love. Sounds like you had a thoughtful and winning plan! Did you encounter any obstacles explaining your nonprofit experience in the context of the corporate world?

How many years of experience did you have in the non-profit world and was it also in the marketing area? What kind of corporate job (e.g. big, medium, small company)? It would help me a lot to hear about this because I feel like I don't have a lot of corporate experience but would like to move from the non-profit world into something more corporate in the next couple years.
