Curious what the bereavement leave policies are at various organizations. I work for a healthcare consulting company with 900 employees. There is no bereavement leave, regardless of the person's relationship to you. In your first five years, you get 10 days of PTO annually, to cover all sick days, vacation, etc. If you need to attend a funeral, your options are PTO, unpaid time, or making up time within the same pay period. In the past year, I have seen two employees lose their spouses and return to work within 7 days. I mentioned this to HR in another meeting where they were "soliciting employee input" and was told that they consider this benefit "non-essential" and their offering to be "comparable to other, similar organizations." What do others say?
