Women In Tech

Tutorial (or handholding) needed for Microsoft products

I have been with this company for a year. It is a family partnership (not legally, but practically) and they have always filled in each others weak spots. One weak spot was technology and as they have grown they did not change to meet their needs. Another was the lack of shared space for physical files and notes ( in my truck, in a box in his basement, on my phone). They utilize Apple - Microsoft - Dropbox - Google - independent apps and share log ins and passwords (until they don't). Their past MO has been to identify a problem and buy a solution without integration. As their first office manager, I was encouraged to bring everything into one place, both physically and digitally. To that end, I convinced them they needed to convert to Microsoft products and they did. Now I am in over my head, working from home and would like to get things pulled together so that we can function more efficiently. One additional problem I have is that there is no plan or communication so expectations and the wish list changes almost daily. I am looking for a group to help me talk (vent) and plan about the companies needs that will use the right language so that I can find help. I also want to be able to ask my employer questions to get a plan in place. I don't mind researching or reading tutorials but I feel overwhelmed and want to be sure I am building a good foundation. I'm not afraid of tech, but I am afraid of misusing it. Can anyone help mentor me?

Hi! I am happy to set up some time to mentor you on Microsoft products and help you brainstorm some solutions to the problems you are experiencing or projects you are planning . My email is [email protected] Send me some specific questions or "how to's" for Microsoft so I can brush up on them prior and then we can schedule a video call to discuss. Sometimes just 20 minutes with a real person can be a lot more effective than a few online training sessions depending on your learning style. Looking forward to hearing from you, Kate

I’ve worked at companies that have used many different platforms for technology so you have to save everything in 5 different places. Then you don’t know which one is the most up to date. I applaud you for your effort. Linda.com has amazing tutorials as does Microsoft. As with any change, you will have people that will jump on board first. Maybe you can enlist them on your team to help the others along. You cannot be the resource for everyone on everything after initial trainings

Microsoft also has free tutorials on their website for most of their products: https://support.office.com/en-us/office-training-center. If you have a specific question about a Microsoft product, you can also always post a discussion thread in the Microsoft community: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us. Best of luck to you!

There are a ton of free resources on these products, even more now. LinkedIn Learning is pretty good, but not necessarily free. Also, I'd try your local community college for some structured classes, they have a lot of experience helping people like us. I'm terrible with getting the links right, but here I think I have a link from Google to a bunch of free sources: https://www.google.com/search?q=free+Microsoft+suite+training+online&oq=free+Microsoft+suite+training+online&aqs=chrome..69i57.14711j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 It's way cool you are looking for ways to expand your skills! Lets talk about planning and project management more once you've had a chance to explore these tools a bit. Feel free to connect with me here on FGB.
