Deb

Hi - I am looking for advice as to how I can get back into the tech field after being a caregiver for many years? I have a heavy mainframe background with some client server experience. I am currently enrolled in an online Agile program which I believe will make me more marketable. I am not really getting much positive feedback (if at all) when I do apply. Any suggestions?

I have thought about doing a boof camp but truthfully, 10k is a significant outlay of funds right now. I will continue looking into it. I have also dealt with a few headhunters. After the initial connection, it seems that they don't acknowledge subsequent emails or calls. I imagine that if there isn't a good match up front then it is forgotten. Irelauch is definitely a great organization. I am hoping that an internship or take two opportunity presents itself sooner than later. I appreciate you all taking the time to offer your input. Thank you!

I agree with boot camp if you know your target role. Also, if your situation allows it, offer to internships. If you have a college or community college in your area they may post opportunities. Sign up with an employee agency to do contract work. Does your city have an entrepreneurship opportunities you could volunteer / intern with?

Are you networking much? If your resume is in a pile of dozens, that long career gap may look unappealing - the folks reviewing your application aren't likely to take the time to learn the context and may just pass you over. BUT if you can make a personal connection first, you may have an advocate, and your resume will get a much more thorough review if you're referred by someone in the company. It doesn't have to be much - someone you met briefly at a meetup, a friend of a friend, even a random engineer at the company that you found online and emailed. Just finding someone who will submit your resume helps your odds immensely.

Going to a coding bootcamp is usually a great way to get started because not only will you learn the latest technologies but they will help you find a job after graduation. I live in NYC and two of the well known bootcamps around me are flatiron school and app academy.

I would second a bootcamp you have past tech expirance and a bootcamp could propel you into modern tools. The combination would give you a huge leg up over other bootcamp grads.

Tech is always ever-changing so the more you can learn, the better. But also, networking with women in tech would be a great way to go about jumping in, learning the ropes and finding a job lead.
