How to approach boss about relocation opportunities

Hi everyone! I’m hoping to gain some insights and opinions on what you do if you were in my situation. A little bit of background information: I work in Sales and Marketing in the hospitality field. My company owns several franchise hotels and I live in the city with the most of their portfolio. However, I come from North Carolina originally, where they own one hotel. I am very interested to move home to North Carolina in the upcoming years and want to approach my boss to let her know I’m interested, although they are not hiring for my position anytime soon down there (that I know of!) I mainly want to convey to my boss that I am open to the opportunity, because I feel like if she doesn’t know that, there may come a time where they are hiring for my role in the alternate state and I get passed over due to, basically, lack of my sharing with them. How should I convey my interests- casually in conversation, or formally in an email? Or another way you have experience with? Thank you so much!

I echo all the above. It's really important to have a face-to-face conversation. Think of it as reaffirming your commitment, and requesting clarity around what they see in your future / your progress and path towards what's next. I believe it's vital they know where your ambition lies - and that you want to be front-of-mind when the time / opportunity arises. Ask what they'd want you to be able to do - ie if there are any skills / abilities they'd look for in the person they'd want for that position - and start making it happen. ie putting your hand up for that training. One other thing to think of: you are from there. My guess is you have a network / family/ presence there - so 2 things: 1. if you've let your connections there slip, start reigniting them. 2. be involved in what's going on. Put yourself forward to be interviewed by the local media in N Carolina - as someone who can talk around your job/ area of expertise/ industry/ your career path. Get your name, face, presence out there. Create opportunities for you to be at the property in NC. As a guest speaker. As a mentor. As a volunteer. Just be front of mind. And become associated with the place in your professional capacity. And good luck!

Building on Sandra's comments: go into the meeting with some clear points on why it would be good for the company to have you in NC. What have you accomplished that could be useful there? Help your manager by giving her the facts she will need to support your move when/if an opportunity arises.

Schedule an in-person meeting specifically for that purpose. Ask your boss to discuss your future prospects within the company (relo or no relo). As part of that let her know that you'd like to be kept in mind for any future opportunities in North Carolina. Ask her what you could do to prepare for the types of roles they have there in the meantime.

You're invited.
