Ageism - accepted company practice

Not to pick on Salesforce, however, look at this picture, & missing from most employers' recruiting efforts are 45+ diversity... These candidates need NOT apply. https://www.salesforce.com/blog/2020/02/tips-diversify-candidate-pool.html DEI remains a marketing tool & pretense by organizations of being "woke"

The EEOC has been starting to look at this, so I second the poster above who suggested to screen shot examples of obvious age discrimination and send it in. If you can call it out publicly without harming yourself, that can also be quite powerful.

Thanks for the information, update. Two issues, not killing careers and this level of age discrimination is rampant, yet obvious. What gets me, is since folks are living longer, save for intermittent years of regressions, many will have to extend their works lives. It stands to reason, the workforce will mature...have a good weekend.

Tech and entertainment share this common belief and behavior, particularly when it comes to women. In tech, you're considered old at age 46 (and age 36 in the startup world, even through the average age of an entrepreneur is 45.) And we've all seen the disappearance of women over 40 in almost every entertainment outlet, though there's some recent traction there. So I agree, the DEI talk is just that in many instances.

I am agreeing that even in 2020 the age number over 40 is still biased. I am also in this transition that I can't get passed finding a job. I applied for a young FinTech company and they interviewed me, within 15 minutes I got the letter saying I wasn't a good fit. I felt the conversation went well and the hiring managers were impressed with my organizational matter. I felt that I was only there to meet the quota for age candidates.

I took 6 years off when my son was a year old, and since I was almost 42 when I had him, I was returning to the work force at 49. It took me about 6 months to find my current company. I did get a few interviews with other companies, but one thing I noticed was that even though I felt my 10 years of management experience was very relevant, I was told it was "not recent enough" in my history to make a difference. Management experience is management experience or am I missing something? I was fortunate that Edison had several jobs matching my skill set and their workforce is slightly on the higher side because of being a more conservative environment.

Yup, recruiters / orgs finally recognized, the statement, "young, energetic" is a public announcement, we discriminate. Companies just trimmed the 'age-ist' edges with the ' less liable murky', ...."good cultural fit"... Hard to challenge that wording. What folks don't realize, to be sharp on tech, originates from interest & desire to always learn. I'm sure you've often demonstrated new skills, shortcuts to younger colleagues. The bias stems from your ability is firmly rooted in experience and less that YOU'RE JUST BETTER ... maybe a combo of both. When experience is perceived as a weakness, it leverages power to the less-than... I'm confident, someone reported the description. Age maybe the next, if not already, the next fight against bias in the courts. Have a good one! LOST

I agree that Salesforce’s photos (for the most part) and statistics do not address diversity by age. I do note that in the depths of their inclusion activities, Salesforce does mention age diversity and their policy to create/have a 5-generation workforce, but you’d never know that by a casual look at their site. Salesforce: more emphasis on age diversity, please!

You’re right. This makes me the most nervous about jobs after grad school! I’m 39. I will probably be about 42 or 43 when I finish my grad degree. In some industries, that’s already openly considered ‘old.’ Worried about my future.

Hi Ahd - Thanks for the response. In my humble opinion, I think grad school, in a promising field, vocation that inspires you is AWESOME! Advanced skills ( degrees) you can add to your arsenal of skills, enhances your marketability. Until you retire, mba, mbb, ma, law, phd etc. will emerge as requirements & less as preferred, optional for the most desirable positions. Ageism, along with other "-isms", they're not going away. Any advantage you can attain over them...take it.. Have a good weekend, don't give up..ever! LOST
