Stuck

What to do when you know your current career is not what you want, but you don't know what you're looking for or how to navigate a career change? I am young (25), but know that accounting is not what I want to do. I am currently half way through an MBA in Project Management

Yes, I do plan to do PMP. My parents are both PMP certified and have talked to me about the process of certification, but their jobs are in a very niche sector of healthcare. I also work in healthcare, but not in these areas they work. Agilify is a sister company to my organization and offers us the entire Six Sigma courses. I am currently working on my Green Belt.

Talk to me about your MBA in Project Management. Are you supplementing it with the PMP and/or baking in any Agile certifications? This is definitely the way the industry is trending. The world is your oyster if you choose this route and you can really go in any direction. I've been in the field for about nine years now, and am happy to chat with you directly, if you have specific questions!

You are not alone! In as much as you can, use this time to clarify the vision of what it is that you DO want. I love keeping a notepad or sheet in the back of my planner with a line down the middle - on the left side, write things you DO want; on the right - things you do NOT want. For instance, what do you like about your current job? Cool coworkers? Regular hours with zero drama? The pay? Getting to contribute ideas that impact positive change? What don't you like? Accounting :) Then, as you prepare to apply for PM jobs, begin now documenting the projects you're working on. Every success in your current role will support your application/ interview/ resume for your future roles. This current job is a launch pad for your future. In as much as you can, consider them venture capitalists in your future success - the knowledge, experience, pains and joys will equip you for success in the future. Cheers!

Question! Are you going to school full or part-time?

I would call it full time. It is one class at a time, but each class in only 6 weeks and jam packed with assignments. I started the program in October 2018 and will be finished in August 2020.

I think the fact that you're already working on an MBA in Project Management is setting yourself up for a great opportunity to make a career change. Project management is so necessary and important within a number of industries, not just accounting.
