To Vaccinate or Not that is the Question...

Ok, here it is flu season that fun time we all loath so much. Whether you are a mass transit commuter or a parent with children in school or literally anyone-the flu takes no prisoners. How do we feel about getting the flu shot? I know there are a-lot of mixed feelings on this topic. Personally, I think people should get flu shots for other people. The young and elderly who are more susceptible to catching the virus. Not being vaccinated is just being irresponsible . Thoughts?

I get one every year. It's easy (got mine at the Walmart pharmacy while I was shopping) and I've never had any adverse side effects. Totally worth it to protect myself and others.

I generally do not get vaccinated but that is because I am asthmatic and it can actually be catastrophically detrimental to my health (talking hospitalization). That said, however, I also do not spend time around immunocompromised people, nor do any of my friends or colleagues have young children or elderly persons for whom they regularly care. Were this the case, I'd reconsider in order to provide them that extra layer of protection.

I never got the shot. Not a fan of needles and since I only had the flu twice in 20 years and am helathy, I didn't see it as a high risk. Then a few years ago my brother-in-law nearly died from the flu - 10 days in a medically induced coma, several weeks in rehab once he was released from the hospital. It had attacked every major organ in his body. He's just getting back to normal now. The doctor said he got a very severe strain (his was H1N1) and if he had gotten a shot he would have still gotten the flu, but it wouldn't have been life-threatening. Another patient in the hospital the same time as him actually died from it. He was younger and left behind a young daughter. It really made me think about not putting my family through that as well as protecting those who can't get vaccines. Needless to say, the entire family gets their flu shots every year.

I usually didn't bother, but my previous company began having a medical team come in to the office to give them and it was covered by insurance. That made it incredibly easy. When I started with a new company, I just stopped by my pharmacy and was done within minutes. I've had colds, but no flu since I started taking the shots.

I got the flu shot for the first time this year! It was easy, painless, and aside from feeling a bit sleepy there were no side effects. Totally worth it to protect others as well as myself!

I have received the flu shot for over 10 years. Not once did I get the flu. However, my son has but he doesn't get the flu shot.

I always get the flu shot. We had to when I was in the military so now it's just habit. I also think the body is resilient and everyone who's scared of shots needs to grow up, stop being selfish, and realize they'll be fine/it protects babies/elderly/immune compromised.

The one year I did get the flu, I had not gotten a shot, and lord it was awful. I was exhausted for a month. But that's just anecdotal. Vaccination protects you - even if you do get the flu, it'll be milder. More important for me, it protects members of the community (and my family) who can't be vaccinated or are at a greater risk - the very old, the very young, and the immunocompromised.

Typically you can get one at your local pharmacy, primary care doctor or any urgent care center like a City MD is where I usually get mine.

I got one at Walgreens a few weeks ago... it was covered by my insurance and was quick and easy. No luck at CVS, though.
