I can’t afford a personal trainer so I’m looking for a workout app to take its place.

This time of year, I generally start to gain a little more weight. Not to point fingers but I fully blame the mix of the cold weather, holidays beginning, and generally the opportunities to eat and drink more coming around. (Nope, not blaming myself... Not today). I know this is exactly when I should start working out more to at least break even. Does anyone have any workout app suggestions??

I love Fitness Blender on YouTube. They have hundreds of videos for every level of ability, and all different types including HIIT, yoga, abs, and a whole bunch of challenges. Everything is free, unless you choose to pay for some of the challenges or programs they offer on their website. Good luck! https://www.fitnessblender.com

I love my Peloton and I actually use it! I'm closing in on 300 rides. I'm overweight, almost 50, and I still feel like an athlete when I'm riding it. It's not just a bike you can hop anytime, wearing anything ... it's an incredible community and top notch instructors. I haven't lost a great deal of weight, but I am in better shape. I'm keeping my RA symptoms at bay and used the bike for stress relief while caring for my dad after he had a stroke.

When I first started trying to get my own shit in gear, I found the PopSugar Fitness videos on Youtube really helpful. You can mix and match their 10 minute videos to hit a bunch of different muscle groups, use their full body workouts, or do some of their longer videos, including yoga. The best part is that not only are they free and on your own time, but they don't typically require much in the way of equipment, since they're designed to help guide you on an at-home workout. Also, I've found that when I'm alone, if I grab my weights and other work out toys and pop on an episode of something I like to watch (I'm a sucker for bad, True Crime Youtube narratives) I can lift for far FAR longer than if I'm doing a video or working out at the gym. I do this a lot when I'm sick (but not dying) to keep on top of things, but also when it's cold and I don't feel like going outside for whatever reason... Again, free and easy to do at home. Additionally, if you have some cash to spare, 100% look into Krav Maga. I've been a practitioner since high school and love it. The pitch from old promotional videos was "Some people come to get safe and leave fit, others come to git fit and leave safe." Truer words were never spoken. Depending on where you are in the country, classes can be really cheap. Back in my home state (over a decade ago) unlimited classes ran about $80 a month (I imagine it's gone up a bit), in NJ about 2 years ago unlimited classes were about $90 a month and here in NYC I pay $129 a month for unlimited classes. I don't know what your average personal trainer costs, but I can't imagine you'd get 15 - 20 hours of monthly training for that price...

Hi! Your comment about not blaming yourself made me smile. :-) Wow! I would love to hear your feedback after you've tried 1 or all 5 of the app suggestions sent your way. And to piggyback off of Jason's comment, one more FREE app for eating your vegetables, (and beyond) is the app called DailyDozen. This app was created by a huge research nerd/medical doctor and is in checklist form. (But you can click on videos next to the categories if you ever need more information). Veggies are classified into several different categories, (Cruciferous Vegetables, Greens, Other Vegetables--all with a list of the vegetables that fall under each category) and they're broken down into the amount to aim for, (you can choose metric or imperial) in regards to every separate veggie you're aiming to consume for the day. If you're a checklist type of person, this app may be a great addition to your chosen workout platform. You've got this!

There are several high performance excercise routines on youtube. Additionally, wear warm clothes (so your body won’t create its own layer), eat sparingly (go ahead and eat that cookie) - just don’t overstuff yourself, and eat your vegetables! If you gain a few pounds, (don’t) sweat it, get plenty of sleep, and work towards that beach body!

I use Beachbody on Demand (not trying to sell you, I'm not a coach) because I can workout whenever and at home. I don't like being around people and with my messed up spine, there are workouts for whatever my body will handle that day. There are programs to follow, but you can customize as you want as well. They do have a free trial so do that before paying for the year. Also, I am in the final month of 80 day obsession and it has taken me more than two months to get here. If I skip a week, I just pick up when I can start again. I'm the only one who pressures myself and that is huge for me.

I also am using the beachbody programs: 21 day fix along with the 3 weeks yoga retreat. I am not a coach but I love the programs. I am now in my 50's and never had to worry about but that changed a while ago . I committed to getting back in shape and these programs work for me. They have a lot to choose from so you can pick what works for you . I do highly recommend the yoga program along with weight training , it stretches everything back out.

Yoga Studio (if you like yoga). And if you want to like yoga you can select your level: beginner, intermediate or advanced.

I used to go to Flywheel everyday, but the classes were so expensive (i think 35$ a class), so I signed up for Aptive and their cycling classes are really good. Almost as good as Flywheel! I know that they have like yoga classes, running classes , etc. You should check it out!
