Put Your Hair in a Ponytail and Help Someone Today!

I have had to shut down Facebook this weekend, I'm so disappointed in the women leaders who are starting petitions to open their hair salons, and thinking of going to government protests. Right now is not the time to do that! I got to thinking about it and this is what I wrote: The World Needs Your Love More Than Ever Now Friends, the world needs our love more than ever right now. Some of you have not been affected by Coronavirus. You are frustrated and feel stuck at home and want to get back to work. You have begun participating in online petitions to open hair salons and are thinking of attending protests at your state capital. I want to encourage you to pause and ask yourself this question. Have you spent so much time working that your circle of friends and acquaintances is limited only to those you know from work? Can you try and think of a neighbor, friend of a friend, congregation member or someone in your community who may not be as fortunate as you? Perhaps you know of a single mom who is not receiving child support now, or a restaurant, salon, spa/non-essential business owner or employee who may not have 6 months of income saved? Maybe you know of someone who has lost a spouse or parent to this virus. I bet you can think of at least one person who has cancer right now and is too tired from chemo treatments or too afraid to shop. If you don’t know anyone like this, perhaps your circle of connections is smaller than you realized. Maybe you have limited yourself to only knowing those whom you work with. If you cannot think of one person to help right now, go into google maps and locate a church, synagogue, or funeral home nearby and contact them now. I’m sure they can facilitate a way for you to help someone that is in need. If your biggest problem right now is that you are frustrated with your hair, please consider taking that $150-$200 and gifting it directly to someone in need. Then put your hair in a ponytail and smile. The world needs your love right now, not your protest.

Absolutely! Our neighbor is on oxygen and has an at risk immune system So every shopping trip I leave them a few rolls of toilet paper, paper towel, and some masks Even some extra cold and flu meds Just any simple favor that can b hard to get now

I am so glad this post was written. Excellent points were brought up. "women leaders who are starting petitions to open their hair salons, and thinking of going to government protests" for your hair? Really? All I could think of was how Self-Centered. You can't wait? After all the years going to the salon, you didn't learn anything about fixing your own hair? You need a serf to fix your hair? Like many others have said- Put you hair in a pony tail or wrap it up in a bun or French twist or roll? If you are unable to do this- then I am speechless. Also, supermarkets are still opened and they have hair color kits, highlighting kits, deep conditioners all there. Do it your self until you can go again. It is not that hard. Read the directions.

(applause!) I'm in southern California and ladies are extremely stressed about not getting their hair colored, their eyelash extensions, their pedicures. It's mind-boggling that their perspectives are so limited, and these ladies are so reliant on access to these services!

Can we just keep this to helping women succeed in the work place? We don't need to drag in politics and COVID hysteria because we get more than enough of that elsewhere.

Hi Carrie--point taken. I try to share posts that focus on leadership and being a leader during the pandemic is important, but career tips are what most are here for. Thanks for your feedback.

I understand the primary focus of the Fairygodboss website, but, leadership in the workplace also means capacity for leadership in the larger community. And, one can't be a valid leader if one can't absorb data and facts, and discuss them, as data and facts. Even epidemiologists are saying this pandemic is unique in so many different respects, so "business as usual" is an oxymoron. The better we become at civic discussion and planning within the larger society, the better we'll be at leading and planning in the workplace, when that is appropriate.

Everyone is stressed. Tempers flare. The point is this. Privilege is very pronounced in this pandemic and ... there really is a moral imperative involved here. I’m usually a rule bender, but I’m listening to the scientistS right now and common sense tells me that it is too early for openings. There has to be consistency, or the flood gates will bust wide open and we will be hitting wave 2 before fall.

Yes, giving goes a long way. People know I’m very giving...I have entered fundraisers for my salon, gifted my hair curling iron, given tips on replacing old gel polish, have given techniques on hair blowouts from drying my frizzy natural curls, and most of all: I tell those women on virtual chats no matter if they are done up or not that they look great and they are missed...so to them, that makes all the difference.

I wish people would "check their privilege" before they post on social media. Celebrities posting about the hardships of not being able to leave their mansions and the stupid petition that Beth wrote about in this post. "Oh no, my grey, my split ends, my lack-luster hair is showing" geez! Send your hair-dresser, nail tech, personal trainer, a Venmo with what you would normal spend or send them a "thanks for everything you do for me, I honor and appreciate you" tip and let them and other be safe. I know it's hard to see the world from someone else's point of view but if people can take a second to check their spelling in they post, they can take a moment to check their privilege.

Please stop with the privilege NONSENSE. People want a sense of normalcy. I'm sure you do as well. Privilege has to be the MOST OVERUSED word today. My hair is chemically treated AND WILL START BREAKING soon. That's not privilege - that's a fact. Now I can choose to carefully chemically straighten it myself - but if I live in an area where cases are decreasing and WE ALL WEAR MASKS and they wear gloves - then we should TRY a carefully managed reopening of SOME things. Maybe take a moment and CHECK YOUR TONE.

I agree completely! I’ve seen a catch phrase I love “6 feet apart is better than 6 feet under!”
