I’m 27, in the finance industry and my annual salary is $95K.

I live in Denver, CO and my monthly rent is $1200 a month. My utilities are around $150/month, my car is $200/month, phone bill is $90/month and I have zero student loans. While I’m just short of making six figures, I now realize that the American dream of making six figures is no longer a dream. Yes, I’m comfortable with what I’m making and no, I’m not living paycheck to paycheck. But I cannot imagine having a kid with my salary and being comfortable, let alone feelin like I’m living the dream. I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining because I’m quite happy with my life and reached a salary goal I was hoping to hit by the time I was 35. But my perspective on what’s a comfortable amount to make has changed. What are your thoughts on salary? Do you have a goal you’d like to hit? Has your money perspective changed?

I definitely have a money goal but I don't think of it as linear as I used to a few years ago. I think about how if I build up my skill set in a certain area, I may be able to transition into something higher-paying in a few years and don't think of every single job switch as needing to necessarily give me a raise. I've started thinking of salary as something that the market demands/rewards so its based on what I choose to do as much as it is about how hard I work or what I'm naturally good at. That shift in thinking made me a lot more analytical about how to pursue my money goal ($100k in 3 years is mine....so I think you're doing pretty well!)

That's a great way of thinking about raises. I never really thought of that before.
