Have you experienced burn-out? Did you overcome it and how?
I experienced burnout in my first career two times. It's called compassion fatigue in my field - veterinary medicine - and sometimes you can only take so much hardship and grief before you need to leave. It's a fast-paced, high-stress, physically and demanding job.
When I entered my career as a research chemist, I had many people ask me "Wow, why didn't you stay working in veterinary medicine?" And my answer was, my heart and body hurt from my work there.
As a chemist, I often find myself eye-rolling at what people worry about... about workload, data, etc. Nothing is dying. No one is sobbing into your arms that they did everything they could but couldn't afford more treatment for their dog. Etc. Etc.
So... yes. I've burnt-out, but I've dragged myself out of burn out by switching careers.
That may not always be the answer.
How did you handle it?
