What Are You Noticing?

Scripture tells us that out of the heart the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34). What are you noticing about people's hearts during this time of shelter-in-place? For me, it feels like so much ugly is being exposed and so I have to intentionally fill myself with the happy stories. Pollyanna is still my favorite movie of all times, but I seem to be getting a bit tripped up with some of the negativity being spewed of late. What do you do to help yourself to focus on what is uplifting and edifying?

Hello Linda, for me I have tried to keep the same schedule of after work (me time) schedule like taking time to do my favorite workout class or watching my factor show. My vision board is still hanging up where every day I get out of bed I look at it at the start of the day. Having it visible daily will encourage me to focus on what I set as goals. Completing them during this time of my sparks my creativity if it includes something outside of home plate...

I created a group text thread where friends/relatives can post positive suggestions for dealing with the quarantine, including: -Recipes -Entertainment to download -Online courses -Online travel videos -Tips for staying calm/centered -Instructions for making masks We’ve had many great ideas for making this uncertain time easier and more productive. For example, Yale University’s happiness course can be downloaded. One of my family members set up a Zoom call to get our family together from across the U.S. It was great!

Hello Linda - This makes me think about a quote from Mr Rogers... “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” Fred Rogers brought this quote to us after the events of 9-11, and I think it is helpful now. If you look for the helpers, you will find them! Remember that your mind is wired to look for danger, so remind your mind (heh heh) to look for the people who are helping. I have noticed that being at home more, I am spending more time on social media. Yesterday I was on a page about photography and there was ONE (yes, one out of 30 people) who was just being really negative. I spent a lot of time trying to reason with the guy instead of taking my own advice and just ignoring or going to do something else! Hope you're well and take care!

Honestly, I don’t. I have an easier time facing reality head on and storming through the fire. The reward at the end is that, I made it! Perhaps for this reason, I am better prepared than many for what lies ahead. I am also extremely cognizant of gratitude. I am poor, but rich in spirit. The level of suffering right now, world wide, is unprecedented. From those unjustifiably being trapped in detention centers, to those who were ill suited to face anymore hardship ... I just sit and shake my head sometimes.
