How I’m managing my money this time of year

From hosting and traveling for close friends and family to gift shopping — it’s a pricey time of year. And although my wallet hurts a bit, I love the holidays and I want to enjoy it more than my bank account has allowed me in the past. To help save (or attempt to break even), I recently canceled a lot of recurring subscriptions and it’s been liberating. Whether it’s a monthly box delivered to your door or an ever-growing list of streaming services, what could you cancel to help manage your finances?

My friend and I tend to go out for dinner regularly. We've made a deal to only do dinner out together once a month but to cook and eat in with each other instead.

I also try to do more of this! It's so cozy to be on the couch after dinner in too, the conversations have been more intimate, I really enjoy it.

I'm going to change your question slightly. When was the last time you had your property and casualty insurance quoted? Have you played hardball with the electronic utility companies? Are you paying more than 2% interest on your credit cards? I love the idea of scaling back. Sometimes we've cut the fluff and overlooked the other money vampires in our lives. Final pro tip: see if your library does digital lending. It's an easy way to avoid the Kindle trap if you're a book junkie like me.

I haven't had my property quoted lately! Interesting idea. Thank you!

Good for you! What a great tip! If I had to, I could cancel magazine subscriptions - also delay paying university alumni dues.

Pausing alumni feeds is a great idea!

I haven’t cancelled Blue Apron but I’ve delayed my subscriptions for the rest of the year.

Such a great idea. While I love Netflix and Hulu, I don’t even have time this time of year to watch these streaming services and could definitely cancel them.
