Can I ask about salary now?

I've applied for a full time remote job without published salary expectations. They've contacted me and asked me to take a number of tests and provide multiple samples of my work. Is it acceptable to ask for salary information (information that might halt the process completely - remote position pay varies wildly) before I commit all this time to the next step of the application process?

Job posting laws may vary by state, but in mine, as of 1/1/21, they must include the salary range and benefits. That might not necessarily help you now or depending on which state you live in, but it may be worth looking into. Not that you want to mention laws during the interviewing process, but just fyi. In my state as of 1/1/21, employers also may not ask about past salary history. I do know other cities and states have passed similar laws as this one already.

I concur with the others- asking for a high/low range at this stage is completely appropriate as you are "evaluating a number of opportunities" and you don't want to waste anyone's time if expectations are off. Good luck!

Absolutely.... I was just contacted by a headhunter/recruiter and during our first conversation, she asked my salary range to see if the conversations were worth continuing.

Absolutely ask about the salary!! If the recruiter turns the question back to you, be prepared to answer the question of what salary you are looking for in your next job. Either way you are being respectful by not wasting time.

Yes, and I would say it just the way you did. "before I commit all this time to the next step of the application process." I would think they would appreciate you bringing it up and if it is not within your range, you do not want to waste anyone's valuable time. Good luck!
