Career Change

Hi everyone! I have a BA in English and an MA in Education. Any advice on a career change from Education to Public Relations? Is this a realistic goal? What steps could I take to bridge the gap? Thank you for any advice you have!

Not sure if this is relevant to where you want to go, but check out the Society for Technical Communications (https://www.stc.org/) for certification and job opportunities.

Thank you for your help! I don't have any experience in PR. Honestly, I'm looking to make a career change into something that is in a more creative field and PR seems like a good place to start investigating. I've thought about copywriting or freelance writing, as well.

Do you have any experience in PR? I agree with getting a mentor. But I also just coached someone who was an animal doc who wanted to sell her hospital and become a copy editor and we found her an online UCLA extension course that would give her some credentials and certification and through that the teacher hooked her up with a short internship that resulted in them hiring her. I personally don't see a huge jump from education to PR as long as you have solid writing skills. (And I'm a former professor who moonlighted the whole time I was in education as a copywriter, an editor, a journalist, and author.)

I agree get a mentor and look for people in the field that you are looking to get into. Wow I should practice what I've preached. However, it's not as easy as I like for it to be. Keep trying you will get someone who is willing to take you on and mentor you and this way it will open the door to new opportunities. Good luck

Hello, Having changed careers twice, the best advice I would give anyone seeking to change careers is to seek out a mentor in the field you're interested in. Maybe you can search the profiles here and approach someone to personally mentor you on what PR work is really like and how to get your foot in the door? I found a mentor via YouTube once, believe it or not. I also found a mentor via my college's alumni association. That person's insight and advice was invaluable to me. Best of luck & success to you.
