Transition - How to stay relevant + engaged

Hey everyone! I'm 8 weeks pregnant and have recently completed my Masters in Org Behavior. Through school I've been consulting in HR/People Ops for startup companies and am getting ansy to get back into an in-house role. Does anyone have any advice on how to manage this transition into motherhood while also moving my career forward?

Hi & congrats! I accepted a new job when I was around 6 weeks pregnant with my second. I started the job around 9 weeks & told my new boss at the time I was pregnant around 14 weeks. He joked with me that he half expected it & that he hired me for the long term. While I felt slightly guilty at the time, it all worked out & four years later I’m still at the co & have been promoted. My advice is to not let the pregnancy hold you back in the job search or networking. People nowadays expect women to have babies & they understand that they’re hiring you to do the job years to come. Also, yes, look into a company’s maternity leave policy before you sign on. I was not eligible for FMLA — most cos require you to be there for a full year before you can be eligible. I was, however, eligible for short term disability, but I had a shortened maternity leave bc of the FMLA issue.

Knowing legally what kind of maternity leave your future employers have to offer before taking a position is a must!

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy! Follow your gut on this one. Start making the career transition conversations and networking now. When and if your career changes is unpredictable but taking initiatives early than later is something you can control!
