How soon is too soon to ask for help?

When you're first making friends and find out that someone does something that you're interested in, how long do you wait to ask for help in that area? For instance, asking about legal advice from your new lawyer friend or about your skincare woes from your new aesthetician friend? Even how to make a cocktail from a current or former bartender?

If you find a connection, you can share your experience and ask for help almost immediately. But be effective in asking for help: 1. When you ask for help, be very, very specific about the help you want and why 2. Avoid disclaimers, apologies and bribes 3. Do not ask for help over email or text 4. When you ask someone for their help and they say yes, follow up with them afterward There is a good TED talk on this: https://www.ted.com/talks/heidi_grant_how_to_ask_for_help_and_get_a_yes

Because they are my friends and I value their time I always offer to pay them. They may not let you but at least it shows respect for what they do and their time.

Interesting comment, I just listened to a great talk that highlighted 4 things that are critical for successfully asking for help, and asking people to pay for help actually deters them for helping.
