Preparing for a Job Talk During an Interview

I recently finished my second phone interview for a position that I'm actually excited about. The hiring manager has asked that I prepare a high level, 20 minute, presentation on a project I worked on / technology I know of. It's hard to think about which things I have worked on in the last 5 years that would make for an engaging talk. Part of me knows I should focus it on the skills that they are looking for specifically, but some of the projects I worked on highlighted my leadership qualities and ability to learn new tasks. Eeek, nerves!

Concrete numbers are important - and stories about overcoming failures or issues within the project are important as well! Do what you can to cover all your bases here. How did you work with other teams within this project? How did the project further the company's goals? How did it support the customer?

My suggestion would be choose something that either reflects how you tackled and solved a problem, increased revenue, or decreased costs ...or... if you’d rather show something that pertains to software/tech, choose something from the job description that either seems to be the most critical or the best of their “would be nice to have’s.” Tell yourself you already have the job and are preparing this for your new team. You want to show them your skills and how you tackle challenges. I hope this helps.

The position that you have applied for, keep it in mind, and the roles & responsibilities associated with it. Your past experience that aligns well with the position needs is to be highlighted. A successfully completed project and technology that is of their interest should be your main focus to talk about. Bring something of their interest on the table. There are 20 minutes for you to tell them you are the best. Start with your project details that you have worked on and technology that you used. But whatever you bring to the table should be your expertise, any question related to it should be answered. While completing your project summary, try and end it with your leadership roles in it and that it was something new that you learned. Give an impression that you are open to new technologies and a quick learner according to the needs and demands of the company. Rest, Just be you and positive. All the best !! Let us know , how did it go.
