Graduating in the middle of COVID

Best career advice you could give a student that is graduating (virtually) during the time of Corona? It seems like no where is hiring !

While you are in a situation that has never been dealt with before, don't be afraid to network with potential companies. Requesting "information interviews" to learn more about a potential company gives you an upper hand, while opening up a door for opportunity! Good luck!

First of all, keep this experience in your memory to help you plan for the future. What you're going through is incredibly hard and uncertain, but life is full of challenges and uncertainty. Facing & overcoming this adversity early on in your career will mold you as a person. I totally agree with Maggie S' comments above - Pick strategic volunteer opportunities that allow you to use the skills aligned with the career you want to get. Network & learn how to sell yourself. The goal is to show you were being strategic even during the time it takes to find a job. Finally, start something on your own with little to no cost. Assess your skills and what you like to do, then think about the problems people need solved today. Just got a teaching degree? There are lots of people looking for online tutoring or educational materials. Business major? There's going to be a ton of businesses who are short staffed but need analysis work. And so on.

I graduated during the Great Recession - it's possible to find work , but you do have to be patient! Seconding the recommendations above for volunteer work and virtual learning, and if you do those, I encourage you to include them on your resume and LinkedIn profile. Networking is huge as well. Reach out to your alumnae association, to your friends who graduated a couple years ago and are in the working world, and even friends of your parents or aunts and uncles. Let people know what you're interested in doing and how you'd like to start your career. Good luck!

There appear to be several positions for social media roles in various career fields. For creative digital nomads who are fans of social media and actively participate, that is an important and fun role to think about upon graduation. Definitely take the chance to network and gain support from people with your same goals; it’s not necessarily a time to think of them as competition, but as teammates who can promote your skills or collaborate with.

Volunteer where possible to gain skills - offer your time, look for any internships that might consider you, broaden search to other employers that may have corollating positions, but not specifically in your major. Foot in the door is worth something coming out of this.

Don't stop learning. Also attend as many virtual networking events/webinars as you can and then follow up with the presenters via LinkedIn. Explain your situation and ask to connect. Many people are willing to help others out :)

Some companies are still posting jobs, especially healthcare, remote work, and tech-focused positions. New grads are more likely to be tech-savvy so brush up on your Zoom skills and just start applying! Here are some tips for job hunting during a crisis: 1. Expect virtual interviews 2. Get ready for long hiring processes 3. Consider/expect remote work--even if the job isn't usually remote (tips taken from my blog post here:https://www.zipjob.com/blog/job-hunting-tips-to-use-during-the-covid-19-outbreak/)

Great tip! Remote or virtual assistants are great insight into industries Nonprofits are actually a great experience builder, too. That's where I started working on marketing and content writing, leading to my current position. Another important point is that this may not be the time to hold out for your dream job; rather, gain experience where you can to learn what your dream job is.
