Equipping and supporting teachers in the age of COVID

The job of school principal has become infinitely more complicated as we learn the tools that are necessary to keep our schools running seamlessly. Our teachers are overwhelmed with new technology and a new form of teaching. It takes patience, perseverance, and strength to lead and serve these amazing individuals who teach the curriculum to our scholars every day. We as school leaders much endeavor to find any way to serve those who serve the most needy of our time, talents, and treasure of knowledge.

Teachers will definitely need the support this year. However they will be teaching, either in person or remote, they will need that support from their school, parents, and family. This will school year teachers will be in uncharted territory, that support is a must!

This is really a no-win situation for everyone in education. There are too many competing and conflicting demands, ensuring that it is not possible to meet all of them. In the end, everyone is unhappy about some aspect of the solution. I supervise teachers, and work hard to honor their efforts to teach, to connect with students and their families, and to learn all the new things they've been asked to learn recently. I've tried to send the message that it's OK if things aren't perfect - focus on student-teacher relationships first and the learning will follow.

I completely agree. Parents are struggling, and I feel like teachers feel the brunt of this, even though parents are NOT really angry at the teachers. My son's kindergarten teacher went to each student's residence to post a letter to them on a tree near their house (which is so, so beautiful) to encourage them. We saw her posting ours, and talked to her from 10 feet away. We said "We just wanted you to know how much we appreciate all your hard work and we know this must be a very difficult time." She just kept nodding waiting for the "but [insert complaint here]." After a few seconds she gasped - realizing that we were not going to complain - and almost started crying. She is so, so great and I hate that she's had so much thrown on her in a short period of time. I hope teachers get the support they need in the coming school year.
