What are your thoughts on the negative online/press reaction to the USWNT World Cup win over Thailand 13-0?

I feel like it would've been more disrespectful for them to stop playing just because they knew they were going to win. They are athletes, and it's a world championship tournament. I wonder if the same criticism would've been leveled against a men's team?

I definitely don’t think the same criticism would have been given to the men’s team. I have several thoughts: 1. It would have been more disrespectful for the USWNT to stop playing or ease up. These are professional athletes and part of that is making adjustments mid-game to stay competitive. If you are unable to accomplish that feat, it doesn’t mean the other team should stop playing. 2. I don’t think the USWNT was taunting the opponent or “rubbing it in their faces”. They were competitors until the final whistle — which is more beneficial for their next game in terms of physical and mental preparedness. 3. It is crucial to score as many goals as possible in the event they end up in a tie-breaker. 4. LET’S CELEBRATE THEIR WORLD RECORD! 5. The USWNT scored 13 goals in one game, which is more than the USMNT has scored in 379 days. #whorunstheworld? GO GET ‘EM LADIES!

My friend who's super into soccer said she thought it was total overkill to score that much/unsportsmanlike because of widely accepted standards for how you should play if you severely outmatch an opponent. I don't know what to think myself, honestly.

I don't think the same criticism would have been leveled against a men's team. Also, can we talk about how they BROKE A WORLD RECORD in scoring those goals? I say hat's off to them! #girlpower
