can I ask what the pay is before applying for a job?

I recently sold my business and want to get a part-time job in a certain area that has a broad range of pay scale. I need a certain hourly wage to be able to do some consulting on the side. There is a position I'd like to apply for on Indeed but it doesn't mention the pay. Is it ever appropriate to ask what the pay rate is before applying?

I would go ahead and apply, and if you are contacted for an interview, ask at that time.

yes and you can also look it up on Payscale, Salary.com, Somparably to get a sense of the range as well as how much you can command

You can- or you can just apply and then decided if you want the job for that amount of pay if they even get back to you!

I agree. Plus, it generally comes up on the first call so that helps not invest too much time in the interview process if it is lower than you need.

Agreed! I think that mapping out your own salary range before asking is beneficial too. This way, you can ask if they'll meet your requirements before advancing in the process.

Absolutely ask. You can reach out to the job poster or the contact person and state “I noticed you had said position available, I am very interested in the position. Would you be able to provide me with the starting pay or pay range?” You want to know before wasting anytime with applying. I’ve received many calls about the pay for positions even when the pay was posted lol.
