Applying for 2 roles at the same company

Hello, I’m looking for advice/opinions from recruiters and talent acquisition people. I recently submitted my resume (through a former colleague) for a position at her current company. Two days later, the company posted another listing that looks like a slightly better fit with my experience. Both roles are within Marketing, so it’s possible the hiring manager is the same. Would it look bad to apply for the newer position, too? I still have to go through their ATS, and I think the keyword matching between my resume and the new job description could be more to my advantage. However, I don’t want to appear unfocused in my search. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks, Allison

Goals should scare a little & excite a lot

I am also facing this. A colleague at another company submitted my resume for an operations role within her employer. This role is something I can do, but is outside of my wheelhouse. When II did the initial phone interview with the recruiter, she sent me a link to the company website that showed some additional roles I had not seen. One of these roles is something that I can do well and would like the role immensely. I sent the recruiter an email, thanking her for the links and mentioned how I felt this “other” role would be a better fit for me. I closed the email with the below - “Please let me know your thoughts on either role, but ultimately, my goal is to make a difference with “COMPANY NAME” overall. She did respond back to me and has indicated that I am still moving forward, so it did not seem to deter her that I was asking about another role.

I agree with the suggestion to ask your internal contact for best practices first! I also personally don't feel like applying to two positions at the same company is a problem if you justify it in your cover letter. You can write something like "I'm a huge fan of the mission and culture of Company Name, and often revisit your careers page for open roles that would be a great fit." When they see you've applied to two roles, it's not because you're unfocused. It's because you're legitimately a great fit for both (as they'll see from the ATS) AND legitimately invested in the company. Does that make sense?

Yes, thank you. This makes perfect sense, although their ATS doesn’t allow for a cover letter. I think there’s a former employee who might have more insight into that team, so I’ll contact her today.

Since you already know someone, I would inquire through them.

Thanks. My contact there is in a different department and doesn’t know the hiring manager or anyone on the team; but I’ll check in with her to see if a second application seems like it would be acceptable within the company’s culture.

It depends on the discrepancy between the roles. If they are similar then I don’t think it would be a red flag but if you applied to >3 and very different roles (say Director vs Coordinator) then for sure the Recruiter will question it and possibly even get annoyed. Just my experience sitting with Talent Acquisition for 10 years.
