In a predicament. What’s everyone’s opinions on applying to more than one position at a company?

I applied for one role and then another opportunity came up two weeks after putting my name in the hat. I like the second available position even more and think I’m better qualified for it. How does this look to a recruiter or hiring manager? It’s still within the same department, just a different role.

@Alyson I like your way of thinking. There are positives and negatives. As a long time Corporate Talent Sourcer, I see this a lot. It is a combination of applying and networking your way into a company to get that inside scoop. In your case - you are talking about 2 roles - I have seen people apply to 20+ in a short period of time, but their interests are all over the place and the roles don't fit their background at all. Advice time: Apply for both, you do not want to miss the boat of not being considered. If you have been contacted for a screen by the recruiter, let them know you have also applied for another role (they should see it in the applicant system), but ask if they can take a peek at the role and give their expert opinion on which role suits you better or that you have a better shot at. Ask for the blunt honesty.

I think it's worth it to apply for the role that's a better fit and explain why. It can be bad form to apply for anything and everything at a company, but it's less likely that similar roles that match your skillset would set off alarm bells.

That's quite the predicament. Does their application system permit for cover letters? If so, you could say that they advertised two positions for which your experience qualifies you and that you would enjoy the opportunity to speak with them to see where your skill set and experience could best benefit the company.

I just talked to a friend who is a recruiter at a big fortune 50 company shoot your question to see his opinion. He said it depends on the company culture and size. Some places are so big and relatively uncoordinated when it comes to a cohesive recruiting culture. Other places he’s worked actively discourage departments and recruiters from trying to take the same people and even mark candidates who apply to more than one role as having done so. Hopefully they will be understanding if the roles you applied to are relatively similar
