LinkedIn connections

I'm an absolute fool when it comes to networking of any kind. So far the only people I've connected with on LinkedIn are some of my coworkers and some people looking for lead generation. What is you strategy on making connections? Do you go out of your way to connect with strangers, and do you message them? Do your connections message you? How do you respond? I know that posting and commenting are also excellent tools, but I'm just curious about growing/maintaining on a person-to-person level. Thanks!

Lexi, Download my free ebook at www.sparkcareercatalysts.com. It has templates you can use to build your network on LinkedIn, though the ebook is for female and minority marketing professionals to land their next dream job.

Lol Lexi! I laughed out loud when I read "absolute fool." My strategy is to ALWAYS CONNECT WITH ANYONE I MEET (even if we only meet via phone or Internet). Whether that's in-person networking or meetings or work functions, my family and personal friends, new friends I meet socializing. I connect with everyone and I recommend you always write a personal note, something like, "Hey Lexi, it was great to connect with you on Fairy God Boss. I'd love to stay in touch here! - Eva" You can practice on me: https://linkedin.com/in/evajannotta/ ;-)

Have you attended any meetups or in person networking events? Those always help for the face to face interaction. I hate networking, but what I'll do is go to an event, try to talk to at least one person and then follow up with them on LinkedIn.

I use LI as a "Rolodex" of sorts and mostly as a supplement to face to face connecting. When I meet people in real life, I connect with them there too. Then, when I am exploring new companies or ideas, I follow and engage on the content they/their companies share to get a sense of who they are and what they're really about.

Connecting on LinkedIn hasn't ben very successful unless I know for sure that they know who I am.

I too have a lot of those lead generation connections. I do get connections here and there via connections of connections. Sometimes just by liking or commenting on something a connection has made. Or commenting on a particular article.
