Strategies for Articulating Transferable Skills

Does anyone know of some good strategies for articulating transferable skills when you don't have direct experience for the position you are selected to interview for?

Great advice given. The only thing I would add is to use a search engine for "sample resumes for campus recruitment" and see if any of their phrasing applies to you. Sometimes it helps to have something to use as a reference rather than starting over with a blank screen.

Thank you Kimberly for your advice also. I am planning to join a local chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management soon in my current city, so that I become actively involved as a volunteer. This will definitely help me gain new skills related to HR.

if you have used the skills in a volunteer role, that counts too

Hello Jen. Thank you for your advice about explaining how I demonstrated certain skills. In my current role, I have demonstrated problem-solving, public speaking, communication, time management, dependability, and dealing with a wide variety of people.

I suggest read the job description you are applying for highlight key words. Find ways to fit those words into your resume. Think of qualities you would imagine someone in that job position might display, and think of examples how you have displayed those qualities in your previous work history. Good luck! Career change is hard but not impossible!

Hello Chantelina. Thank you for the advice you provided. I agree with you about finding ways to fit key words into my resume and thinking of how my transferable experience could help me in the position I am interested in. Making a career change is definitely challenging, but it can be achieved over time.

What is the position you are applying to vs your skills or experience?

Hello Demiray. I haven't applied for any positions yet, but I am interested in a campus recruiting position at a particular company, which involves but not limited to the following preferred knowledge: planning, coordinating event logistics, such as venue and catering selection and contracting, technology requirements; supporting the early identification of on-campus job seekers by utilizing recruitment technologies (CRM/ATS) and on-campus career postings. I have over 7 years of experience working in higher education with undergraduate students by participating in admissions recruitment events, academic and career advising, and building relationships. However, I don't have direct Human Resources experience with the preferred knowledge I mentioned. I know that I can articulate that I can gain the preferred knowledge if I was interviewed for the position.
