Workspace advice - Standing Desk

Today is my first day back to work after a long holiday break. My husband got me a standing desk for Christmas and I LOVE it! Today will be my first day in my home office standing and working. Looking for advice on how to be most comfortable. Any shoes recommended? Or other feedback for working while standing? Thank you!

I love my standing desk and have gotten very used to it. I find it helpful to set a timer for myself so I vary my position. Once I’m standing I forget to sit and vice versa! As for shoes-I would try multiple kinds. I’m in an office environment and am fine in flats or even certain heels. I sure would love tennis shoes though!

DO NOT USE AN ANTI FATIGUE MAT!!!!!! They are designed for those who must stand for long periods on hard surfaces such as assembly line workers. Office workers who use them have significantly higher rates of pulmonary embolism, varicose veins, lower back pain and knee pain. When you are tired from standing YOU NEED TO SIT! Movement is actually the most important component during the day. The leading ergonomics researcher, Alan Hedges, suggests the 20 minute rule and it is the guiding principle behind responsible sit to stand use. https://www.moneytalksnews.com/how-much-should-you-stand-or-sit-at-work/

I've had a sit to stand on top of my desk and an electric powered desk that could be raised to stand. At first, I could only stand a few minutes at a time. I also added a foam mat under my desk, it made a big difference. My best advice is set a timer to remind you to change positions every hour. Hope that helps!

Seconding the anti-fatigue mats! Without one, I can stand for maybe 2 hours, but with one, I can stand basically all day.

I agree with Jennifer's advice to sit occasionally and move around periodically, too. Also, you should check out "anti-fatigue mats" that are designed to help take the pressure off your joints while you stand. Here's an example: https://www.varidesk.com/products/standing-desk-antifatigue-mat-36?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzc2prrTv5gIVjZ-fCh2nngFmEAQYASABEgJqJ_D_BwE

A standing desk is great and if I recall correctly from research, the best thing for your body is to combine standing and sitting. My hubby has a standing desk that doesn't lower so he added a bar type stool and stands for a while then sits for a while.
