A nostalgic dinner idea that every guest will love

My friends and I like to home hop monthly to catch up — and every time there’s a new food/drink theme to the night. Last weekend’s theme was my favorite so far... The theme was nostalgic night so everyone brought a snack, appetizer or dessert that reminds them of their childhood. The host’s main meal was grilled cheese dipped with tomato soup and a salad. The rest was a free-for-all! Guests didn’t tell each other what they were bringing to keep it a surprise... Because the reactions were arguably the best. While the food wasn’t necessarily complementary (and not the healthiest batch) — it got us all talking about our childhood. Plus we ate foods we hadn’t tried in years and it gave everyone a reason to contribute. Here’s the list of items everyone brought. Fig Newton’s (2 people came with this!) Mini PB&J sandwiches (best jelly flavor was a great debate). Pizza bagel bites (gone within minutes) Salami and cheese bites (deli sliced style) Sour patch kids Poptarts (what’s your favorite flavor?) Kraft mac and cheese (classic) Chicken and Parmesan stew Lunchables (the jam and cheese flavor) Sliced apples and caramel dip FGB’ers, what food would you bring and why?

Nisu is a Finnish bun seasoned with cardamom and covered with a sugar glaze. My grandmother made it, and now I make it for Christmas morning.

Celery with peanut butter! And for New Year's Eve, my mom used to mix those tiny canned shrimp with cocktail sauce and spread it on Ritz crackers (I still eat shrimp cocktail on New Year's Eve almost every year!!)

Ohhh, I like this! I also like everyone bring a dish that's special to their family heritage -- always get some really good food that way.

What a great conversation starter for a party! I can relate to most of the ones on the list, but the first thing that came to my mind from my childhood was...jello. Specifically jello in the shape of the bundt pan it was poured into with a can or two of fruit cocktail mixed in. Colorful and tasty, but kids were most fascinated to watch it jiggle and curious on how the fruit seemed to be floating. All great memories.

My grandma used to give me rice cakes with a slice of cheese on top - no idea why but it reminds me so much of her house & when I was younger!

Love this idea! I was going to say sliced apples and caramel dip, but since it's already on the list, I'll go with Gushers!
