I'll be turning 27 in about a month..

What are some advices do you have for your 27 y/o self? I'm trying to set up some goals for myself as I'm entering my late 20's and I'm looking for inspirations! It could be about anything! Career, relationships, health, etc. I'm all ears!

I set up a monthly check-in with myself. I have a spreadsheet in Google Drive for it - where am I at financially? How is my health? What are my small goals for this month? I'm working on a "kanban" style backlog as well so I can build out goal steps toward larger things like house buying, getting married, and starting grad school, but for now, I'm focused on paying off my student loan debt (still reeling from the recession), paying off my credit cards, increasing my credit score, and building my professional network.

This is going to sound crass but isn’t meant that way. How’s your wardrobe? Does it function through all work, going out, and housework or does it need an update? Proper hemlines, garments that have structure already built in them, and are in colors and prints that are not dated become a massive milestone as we get older. For example i rejected blazers until mid 30s all the sudden i embrace blazers and am taken seriously! Starting to limit expenses and items is a nice step towards growing Remember you buy this you have it a lifetime or until u give it away which at that point u were just leasing it in all logic

Max out your contributions to your 401(k). Keep pushing yourself to learn more - don't pigeonhole yourself into one focus, but branch out and learn new/different things. Continue your education, whether it be a photography class at the local community college, or classes toward your Master's degree. Find a hobby you're passionate about.

Make sure you are challenging yourself and challenge your manager to do so, too. I had a great, but comfortable job in my late 20s and I never pushed my manager at the time to push ME. So I feel like I spent my late 20s not learning as much as I could. Also, I had a baby at 29, (which was totally planned and wanted), so I actually spent a lot of my late 20s preparing my body... I cut back on certain things that weren't as good for me and got serious about cleaning up my beauty routine, which is something I would suggest to anyone in their late 20s (baby plans or not).

I'm not too much older than you, so I could still use some wisdom on my late 20s haha, but I think the biggest thing I've learned is don't sweat the small stuff. I know that is a cliche, but I've genuinely looked back at things that have caused me so much stress and anxiety and pain and they really don't matter in the large scheme of things.

Software engineer, diversity struggle is real.

Don't limit your goals to your existing path or previous experience. Whether it is personal or professional goals, it is never too late to set a new one or have a new beginning. At 26 I became an amateur Muay Thai fighter, at 28 I switched careers to become a software engineer with no college degree and moved out of a state. I have never been happier or felt like more was possible.
