Exhausted

I will have my second Masters Degree in May. I have exhausted all efforts in finding a job. I have revamped my resume, utilized career services, networked until I’m blue in the face, any and everything including crying myself to sleep because I feel my 7+ years of education and hard work has been in vein. I need help what am I not doing?

I am not sure what your personal/family life looks like, but if you are able to move to a new location, you can expand your search. Opportunity may not be next door, but maybe next state.

Oh, no doubt. I’m not whining here, just stating a fact. If you are 50+ and stayed on a career trajectory with tons of experience in one field, then get laid off or let go, it will be a struggle but you can find something. If you’ve got more than one hurdle (and many do), it might be the end of the road for meaningful work within an organization. I was self-employed in another industry for 25 years but it was taking a toll on my body and unfulfilling. So I went to school and dreamed big - was told by my professors that someone would “snatch me up”. Despite my relentless efforts, that has not happened. You should watch this segment of CBS Sunday morning. https://youtu.be/2hQYVWs-CyI Listen carefully starting at at 4 min. 28 sec. That pretty much sums it up.

Well, I know it’s of little help, but I’m right there with ya’. I have three degrees - B.A. in Psych, M.S. in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution from a prestigious university, and another similar M.A. from a smaller university - I graduated from both the masters programs with a 4.0 GPA. I have tons of volunteer experience and other credentials, but because I tried to career transition at 52 (DON’T try this at home) ... I feel like I am screwed. To be fair, there are other factors too, like I recently had to move “back home” to help with family. This really fractured my already fragile network. So here I sit, at 58, with so much to offer, still energetic, wise, innovative, and I can’t make the final cut. I’m beyond exhausted. My outlook on life and the viability of the human species has metamorphosed into something I’m not proud of - and I have grave concerns about the election this fall. Pheeeeeew, it’s a lot.

I thought it was just me. I keep hearing how the unemployment rate is so low and it's an employee market. Every time I go to job fair, I keep wondering who is getting hired because there are so many over 50's there

I was working on my masters when I first lost my job. Job hunting was so hard while trying to take classes. I'd love to finish my master's; still haven't found a job. A friend of mine had been unemployed for 20 months. You could have pushed me over with a feather when he told me that. That feels like me plight now.

Wow! Congratulations! Very impressive Racheal. Sadly, these days most job opportunities are acquired through contacts and networking versus the practice of submitting resumes and cover letters. If you have a network in your field - professors, internship supervisors, fellow students, etc. use them to network into an opportunity ..."Now that I have finished school I am looking to do X ... do you know anyone in this field I could speak to?" If not, try volunteering to build a new network. With all that know how, something is bound to come your way ... just keep at it! Best of luck!

I am in technology and I have the same issue. In my case, it is gender biases. Have you had any interviews?

Maybe try looking outside of government and into something like nonprofit management or healthcare? Healthcare and work within hospitals seems to be a growing area and usually there are lots of opportunities for growth internally.

I'd hire a headhunter or recruiter- sometimes it helps to have a fresh pair of eyes help you.

I was working on my MPA and burned out while also job hunting. I had been looking at Ohio govt jobs, and even interviewed for 2 positions. Idk...I have a lot of govt experience, but it seems really hard to get in as positions stay open forever. On the flipside, I haven't received a rejection letter regarding those two positions
