If your friend was offered a promotion.....

If your friend was offered a promotion with no pay increase, what would you tell her about that?? I always find it interesting how many promotions are offered without a pay increase. This happens more frequently than I would like to admit... What do you think about this? What advice would you give to somebody who is going through this?

I agree with LadyPele. Important to understand why she isn’t getting the raise, and whether a specific timeline is in place to get one.

If the promotion is in line with her long-term goals, she has a couple of options. 1. She can request that a timeline for a salary review be set and ask that the requirements be clearly documented. 2. She can negotiate for other benefits (additional vacation, company-paid car, company-paid phone, working from home X days per week). 3. She can accept it, update her resume with the promotion and start looking for other opportunities.

I would encourage her to negotiate for other benefits- more vacation time, work from home privileges, something else that she may value.

Your base salary is KEY! But in lieu of not having an increased base identifying what YOU value in the workplace is a great place to start.

I should have elaborated that this is my recommendation after salary increase discussion. I'm assuming the poster's friend may have already discussed the pay and they said no. I would still suggest negotiating again, along with alternatives.

AHH yes - so step 1 is asking to increase your base and IF NO then get some other fringe benefits out of it?

A salary increase isn't the only new perk you can get from a promotion. Does the company charge for employee parking? Ask to have yours for free. Have a company laptop? Negotiate more working from home days. Or stock options or an incentive program like commission or bonus opportunities. I was recently promoted and the salary wasn't what I was hoping, so I negotiated a nice little benefits package to go along. Don't miss out on other perks by thinking that money is the only thing that matters!

Interesting perspective. I would be leery to take on more responsibilities, more authority and more accountability if the financial benefit wasn't also considered. Everything hinges on your "eligible earnings" so paying for fringe benefits (which are also taxable benefits) doesn't have as great of an impact on your overall total compensation. Most of us work because we need to (it's a bonus if you enjoy what you do) so getting those fringe benefits may or may not make up for the additional workload that is taken on. Of course, it all depends on the company you work for, where you're at in your life and/or career. I've had clients who were in the last but if their career and didn't care about a greater salary, all they wanted to earn was more holiday time to ENJOY their earnings!! It absolutely isn't a one size fits all answer which is the beauty of negotiation :)

I'd tell her to ask for a raise- they won't give it to her if she doesn't ask, and clearly a promotion means they think she's worth it. Worst thing they can do is fire her, and she can go get that job somewhere else- with a pay increase!

I'm curious... Why do you think she would be fired for asking for a raise?

They wouldn't say "How dare you ask for a raise, you're fired!" But she'd find that her boss likes her less, she gets passed over for the next promotion, and 6-12 months later she'd be out of the company. Not okay, not even legal, but it does happen. But if she's in the kind of place where it does happen, leaving is the best thing that could happen to her!

Has something like this happened to you in the past? Have you been passed up for requesting a salary increase on a promotion?

I would encourage her to speak up! The worst thing they can say is no.

I would say no. If they think she is good enough to do the additional responsibilities then they should compensate her for those skills. She could go elsewhere and get that job and get the pay with it. If you allow them to do this then the trend will continue.

LOL exactly :) Taking on more responsibility without any additional consideration doesn't seem to make sense, right? We know this, but many people receive promotions without a "promotion" in their pay.
