Not Buying This Clothing Item Has Expanded My Wallet Size

Every season, I like to expand my wardrobe in ways that keep my workwear up-to-date and new! I usually buy a few new pants, tops and accessories as a way to essentially treat myself but I realized that pants are no longer a priority for me with this "new norm" world. I work from home and video conference through meetings quite a bit. But realized that I can wear cozy pants with a nice work top and be comfortable while doing so! I've decided that I'm not tapping into buying pants for a while -- because let's be honest... pants are useless. :). Has anyone else found themselves spending less on items they normally would splurge on during this time?

As a former personal stylist who often worked from home and is now 100% work from home like the rest of us ... ALL about the comfy pants to get into the flow when at home. I am a bit particular so I do like to have good quality yoga pants that still make me FEEL good. Whether dressing to get out the door or dressing for working from home, it's dressing for performance, right? And I consider my workout clothes performance clothes! ;) Also, pants are the HARDEST to find the right fit for, so a quick tip to get a bit more clarity + confidence in your closet for right now: TRY ON ALL THOSE BLACK PANTS and only keep the ones you LOVE. You may need to update with new pants down the line if you find yourself going into the office on a more regular basis down the line, but take note of the different fits/fabrics you would want so you're adding variety + fun to your wardrobe if you do update. If you continue to WFH, you'd still want to have at least 1 pair of black pants that feel really good so you can throw an outfit together when you need it.

Great black pants tip! I should try that.

I discovered that all the high-waist styles I love are not conducive AT ALL for sitting down for long periods of time. I’m used to being on my feet and moving constantly so never had this issue. I’m becoming better friends with lower rise and stretchy pants. Tho I admittedly have to put on real pants some days. Too many days in a row of leggings and I feel like I’m falling apart!

ha! yes - I usually have a standing desk at work and high-wasted clothes are so different when it comes to sitting down. At least when it comes to jeans/nicer high-wasted pants.

I had a 100% remote job for 3 months and a number of my colleagues dressed down daily. I was used to dressing for work so I continued dressing. I recently started a new j ob with occasional work from home only to be 100% remote due to COVID-19. Now I find myself doing a little of both -- dressing and not dressing up.

Maybe it's good to switch it up based on how you're feeling!

I'm not buying clothes, my makeup and hair product usage is way down. I still get "dressed up" and do my makeup when I have a meeting with someone outside of my organization, but for internal work meetings, we are all casual, glasses, no makeup...it is kind of refreshing.

Ask for it! If you prove your effort at home, demand the ability to keep it.

Unfortunately with my daughter home from college and her working part time at a bakery..She needs to literally strip down when returnibg home. So my laundry making kid has increased our loads of wash.

I’ve worked from home for 15 years. I still meet with clients so have to have both wardrobes. Until the past two years, I never worried about the home one. The rise of video conferencing has changed this. Here is my trick. Cardigans and scarfs. Throw a nice cardigan over a T-shirt or tank or wrap a color scarf around your shoulders.. Ta da! Perfect the 5 minute face and keep a lipstick ? on your desk. Yes, working from home can save you a ton in commuting costs, dry cleaning, lunch’s, coffee runs, and being tempted to keep up with the Janes with office fashion.

Absolutely agree about the scarves. In graduate school I worked part-time corporate jobs. Since I didn't have enough for suits, I would change the look of my outfit with scarves. I've really enjoyed wearing my scarves again!

I agree with you about accessories, but for me, I stick with studs and scarves. Well, sometimes brooches and bracelets!!!

I actually noticed that now that I'm home all the time, I'm buying the things that I have wanted for a while, but kept putting off, partially because I was at work so much, partially because I figured I'd be moving again soon. Like a monitor and printer, but also a lawn chair (I had been hauling out the kitchen chair when I wanted to sit on the balcony), a yoga ball, and a colander. I tried to get a doorframe pull up bar, but that was a lost cause. I'd like to buy a new pair of tennis shoes, but it is my experience that you have to try them on if you want something that fits right.

Order several pairs of shoes from Zappos, try them all on, pick the ones you like and send the rest back free of charge. I buy most of my shoes this way.

I must admit that I am really enjoying the fact that I only have to be presentable from the waist up when I am on a Zoom video call:-) It is quite liberating!
