Green Interview

Instead of printing my resume for today's interview, I brought my iPad. This "green" effort was noticed and appreciated. How else can we "get 2020" with the interview process?

I am answering this question as a hiring manager. If you are planning to bring a digital copy of your resume, confirm that HR or recruiter has passed a copy of your resume to people who will interview you. I usually take notes on a candidates resume. HR usually sends me the resume before the interview and I print it. One time when the resume was not sent to me in advance, the candidate had a digital resume. I took note on my pad of paper. So for everyone that applied for the position, HR received my comments on the candidate on the resume except for the one candidate that had my comments on note paper. Depending on the position, it is appropriate for a candidate to have a portfolio of work examples and positive feedback.

Great question! No, it’s a professional advisory firm. But they are working on their own “green” efforts and were happy to onboard someone with similar vision, I guess.

I love this! In addition to the iPad itself, I've been thinking about digital portfolios and how to make them more impactful during interviews instead of just the standard, "Check out my portfolio." Even classic interview questions like, "Tell me about a time when..." can have pre- loaded answers on a PowerPoint or Keynote slide. I'm not talking about having a paragraph, but a visual representation of customer/client/student feedback, emails, and even pictures of the issue at hand. There are so many possibilities - like screenshots of thank you emails from customers, performance reviews, sales reports, etc. Even a testy email screenshot for the question, "Tell me about a time you disagreed with a supervisor" can have a visual impact. It doesn't even have to be completely drawn out - it can be like, "So this time after XYZ my boss sent me this email (Insert screen shot). So I felt like this, and thought that, and this is how it resolved..." It's not only green, but adds an aditional visual element which can help job-seekers stand out while making a deeper connection to their hiring audience.
