Looking for something new and exciting

Hello Ladies! I am a mom of 3 that was recently laid off after 14 1/2 years at the same company. I have over 20 years of work experience in Inside Sales and Marketing ( Brand, Trade and Communications). I have been home since mid-June. I have been using all the sites everyone tells you to use, LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, Etc. but I am getting discouraged. It seems like I do not always hear back from companies and my resume and cover letter fall into a black hole. I am looking for something new that I can be excited about, make a decent salary to support my family and have flexibility. Just looking for some encouragement and any advice others may have to share.

I would highly recommend getting a professional resume writer/career coach to look at what you're sending out. My dad looked for a job for 8 months with maybe a few interviews and after a resume writer helped him he got a job in the next month!

I didn’t read everyone’s responses, but it is SO stressful applying online. It’s like a giant black hole. I recommend recruiters like the Boss Group and just keep networking. When the opportunities do start coming in for you they tend to all rain down at once. It took me a while to find my current position! Oh, and volunteer work looks great on a resume, so if you have time for that I recommend it (or maybe you already do volunteer).

You must be pretty stressed right now. Being unemployed and having three kids must feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. Others have given advice on the job hunt but I would like to put another lens on your situation. You are feeling discouraged but you are currently a great example to your kids. It would be easy to give up, say woe is me, and complain to the world. Instead, you are getting up every day and showing your kids that life can knock you down but getting up and facing your problems is important. Being a good role model is hard. Take a moment to praise yourself for the following lessons that you are teaching them right now. Things like: ~Dealing with adversity ~Finding out-of-the-box solutions ~How to stay positive when life is difficult ~Asking for help You rock lady! Stay strong and I can't wait to hear that you have found a new challenge!

Have you had your resume and cover letter reviewed professionally or in a networking group? I found an excellent group via Meetup.com for women in tech. If you haven't looked for a job in over 14 years, an outside perspective on how you're presenting yourself on paper can be a game changer, plus the job search has changed - much of it is driven by software that scans resumes for keywords. I recommend having someone who understands ATS and your industry look at your resume!

Are you networking with people at your target companies? Are you asking them to forward information to hiring managers? Applicant Tracking Systems are the bane of the job-seekers existence;l you won't gotten an interview without a personal referral. Also, it really does take one month per $10K of salary. Don't despair that you've been off for three months.

I absolutely feel your pain! As Luna says, do you have any interest in starting your own business? For the moment, I've settled on a hybrid approach - I spend half my time building my own thing and the other half looking at opportunities to go work for someone. It doesn't stay perfectly balanced every day, but it usually evens out like that. Until I'm absolutely certain which way I want to go, I felt like it'd be wise to keep both doors open. So, do you have an option of freelancing or consulting or building your own right now?

You have the exact skill set for starting your own business or freelancing. Digital marketing is all the rage. Keep looking but look at places like fiverr were you can get some independent cash going.
