Working at a desk makes me CRAZY

Ladies, how do you handle a job that requires sitting all day every day? I'm an engineer and I don't mind the work but the lifestyle gets me really down almost a little depressed. Do you know any coping methods? Are there engineering positions that allow for more movement or alternative work for someone with an Electrical and Computer Engineering degree?

There are engineering positions that are more hands-on. (Like biomedical engineering positions at hospitals or with medical companies) However, I would just change up your workspace. I worked in an open-concept office and would often move to our quiet rooms, empty conference rooms, or even the coffee shop in our lobby just for changes in scenery. I would also decorate your desk, make it a place you WANT to be.

I have actively been looking into biomedical engineering jobs, in fact, that's why I became an engineer. Is there anything on a job posting that would indicate that the post is at a hospital?

You should be able to tell by the company name in the job posting. If it’s not listed for some reason, you could look at the amount of travel they list. If there is travel listed, it likely isn’t based at a single location. (You would be responsible for covering multiple sites or a territory.)

Standing desks, walking around, move to another spot in your building. I love being in the office and not sitting all day.

I'm an electrical engineer as well. I use SAD therapy lights, always request a Sit-Stand desk to alternate, and I take a lot of breaks to take a short walk. The walk helps me think and process better on top of feeling better. I injured myself recently but normally I also make sure I have 30+ minutes of an intense workout at least 3 times per week and heavy weights at least 2 times per week.

Some suggestions from working for years in desk jobs: 1) Get a sun lamp - light therapy can do wonders while you're sitting in a dark office under artificial light 2) Go for a walk outside every day that weather permits to get fresh air 3) Listen to music if our workplace allows it (even one headphone in). It will make the day more your own and you'll be able to focus less on your cube-mates' chewing and keyboard clicking 4) Take periodic breaks to stretch and re-position - set an alarm on your phone to ensure you actually do it 5) Place pictures of what you love and your favorite inspirational quote in your view of sight 6) Get a potted plant (if your work allows) or even fake to bring the outdoors in 7) Talk to your manager to see if there are any other lab spaces you could utilize throughout the day to break it up/stand. Explain that you love being hands-on and tell your manager what motivates you.

Good suggestions ! I love to sit and code all day, but Even so, suggestions 1,4,6 were surprisingly beneficial for me!
