Vacation planning

I am gearing up for a quick Labor Day weekend trip and trying to plan ahead to stay on track with my eating habits. While I'll definitely splurge here and there and enjoy my vacation, I'm hoping to find a few tips to ensure I'm eating relatively healthy. How do you balance delicious vacation food with your health goals?

On vacation, sometimes the healthiest food to eat is whatever is local and fresh, for example, a fish caught that morning if you're near an ocean or tropical fruits if you're on an island. The other thing I've found is that local foods are often simply prepared and healthier, as opposed to having fancy sauces and elaborate ingredients like many fine dining restaurants put into their menu offerings. And I agree with Brunette and Banshee on the lots of walking and drinking lots of water.

Whenever on vacation we try our best to make sure we still cook our food for 1-2 meals with food from the local grocery store. This way we spend a lot less money AND eat a lot healthier.

If you can, walk a lot. That should help at least a little to regulate your appetite. If you have access to fresh produce and a fridge, you may want to keep some fruit on hand. Drink water. Sorry, my vacations are mostly splurges, so I’m not really good at this. I salute you, and have a great time!

Try to start each day with a large healthy breakfast (eggs, granola, Greek yogurt, oatmeal, etc.) so that you stay full longer and have the energy to explore the area on foot as much as possible. We always visit the grocery store to buy healthy snacks, and food if there's a refrigerator.

Pack healthy snacks like nuts, minimally processed jerky, peanut butter and crackers, etc. Stop at the local grocery store for fresh fruits and vegetables that you can eat that day.
