Craving food at night

How do you deal with late-night cravings? I'll eat well all day, and then it gets late and suddenly I'm incredibly hungry. Any tips on how to avoid heavy midnight snacking?

My craving use to be tea but it's switched to wine.

I agree on a glass of water or a cup of tea. If you need a snack, I've found small snack high in protein is better for me at night than anything sugary or carb loaded - the issue is having something handy as the crackers or cookies are the quickest to grab.

I am not a nutritionist, but I'd guess that this is a reaction to a blood sugar crash. This happens after a blood sugar high, which is caused by eating carb-rich foods. So, try to eat stuff with less carbs in the evening, or stuff that digests slower. Google foods with a 'low glycemic index' for ideas. Basically, that's stuff that releases sugar into your blood stream slowly, thus avoiding the sugar spike and the following crash that causes you to get the munchies.

Stop eating after 6pm and go to bed around 10:30. I would also cut your sugar and pasta intake during the day. Try it for 2 weeks and see what happens.

I wonder what would happen if you added a little more to your meals and snacks DURING the day.

You're probably not so much hungry as you are thirsty. Start with a full glass of water and drink it right down. That may curb the hungry. If you still have an urge to eat, go brush your teeth instead. Logging your food intake is helpful, too. When you add those fourteen chips and the cookie (just one, right?) and the cheese and apple, then realize that half your caloric intake is after 8 pm, it gives you an interesting perspective.

I've found that having a cup of tea and drinking it slowly has really helped. Or, even a can of seltzer. When I truly feel super hungry, I'll eat, but for the most part, the liquids have helped (adding collagen to the tea can help too).
