Hard conversations at work

Sometimes they have to be had. Whether its feedback that may hurt someone's ego or feelings or having to simply share bad news....what advice do people have about how to do this better? Looking for thoughts and perspectives on both the receiving and giving ends.

The sandwich method is how I was trained and is one way of providing constructive feedback; praise, constructive criticism, praise. Example: I really appreciated how well you handled today’s presentation. Your research was thorough, and you were well prepared for questions. The only improvement I would like to see is to include pictures, pie charts or graphs to illustrate your points and break up the blocks of texts. I can send you an example that (insert an executive's name) presented recently. Overall though, you represented us very well. Good job!

I've also used the sandwich method with success — good suggestion!
