For the same position? That sounds like a company that's trying to fill multiple roles at varying levels of experience, and only wants to pay for one posting.

Thanks! I figured as much. Also, sometimes they specify 6 vs 6+. Is my 10+ yrs too much above the 6+?

Yes 10 years experience in the posted job is not likely to get you a callback. It depends on the role and company but they’re clearly looking for someone with minimal experience which also means less pay. On the other hand, if this role is a career shift for you, then your 10 years is less relevant since it’s in another field. In that case you’ll need to work harder to show how your skills transfer to this new job.

Good distinction! I'll keep both in mind when replying.

I always recommend adding a letter or a statement addressing these obvious discrepancies between your profile and the job description. As a hiring manager, when I get an applicant who doesn't align with the posting, I look for their explanation as to why I should consider them. When they make sense, I keep them in consideration. I don't know if all managers do this, but it doesn't hurt.

If I were composing a job description with 0-6 years, it would mean that I am open to hiring somebody straight from college. That's it! Don't pay too much attention to it. If the hiring manager does due diligence, they will know that salary fro somebody with 5+ years of experience is going to be different from somebody who just graduated. I'd say it's a signal that people with and without experience are welcome to apply!

I agree with Obenny. 0 years experience means it will be an entry level position, while six years means you are in the mid-to-upper end of the salary range.

I imagine it comes down to what salary will be determined. 0 could mean a less than desirable salary while advancing to close to 6 years means an acceptable salary range that will commensurate with the degree of knowledge of the duties to be assigned.
