Tired of being a jober.

I have worked for a big retail company for 4 years now. I have been hunting for new jobs and even management positions within the company to do more with myself then just smile and greet people or ring them up. I need to find something worthwhile (and hopefully pays more). I am always given bigger tasks but never an opportunity to be more than just a place holder or just the one people go, "oh she knows how, ask her to do it." Kind of person. I need something that means something and I won't come home hurting and wishing I could find something better. I want to come home and feel accomplished about my day. Is that so bad?

Helen, definitely time to start fresh. I worked for four years in a job I didn't like, too--with zero chances of promoting to something better--and wound up getting laid off! So get proactive. NOW.

Of course not. Have you thought about learning a skill that would increase your chances of getting that kind of job?

That is a reasonable goal! Perhaps you should look into companies in the area that more align with your passions/interests and see what opportunities are available. Then, you can align your resume to those opportunities and start applying.

Of course that's a reasonable objective. Have you asked your boss what it will take to be promoted? Is there an HR department or internal website that shows career opportunities? Or do you want to leave this employer to find something more challenging and fulfilling?
