Career Change

I'm going to school for General Office, but I'm not sure if that is the right career path for me. I' m having trouble getting my work in on time and I know if I was working in the office I would have trouble meeting the deadlines . I learn at a slower pace than others because I lived with epilepsy for 41 years. i used to work at the ED as a Patient Access Representative but had to leave because the work became to stressed for my health. So now my advisor is going to call, I need to figure out what career changes that I would like to make, but I loved working in the medical field, because I love working with people. Any suggestion?

Charlotte, if you want to combine office work with medical in an environment that is not stressful, you might want to think of a career working in a doctor's office. When you say you are studying General Office do you mean administrative assistant type of work? I temped for many years in admin/executive support roles. It is very detail oriented (which I am not). You may be working for people and helping them, but the work is frequently done in solitude. The biggest challenge is being given multiple tasks by multiple people and frequently having to get them all done NOW. And even when you know something is coming, it frequently arrives late forcing the admin to work to a tighter deadline because it has to be completed by a certain time. Working in a doctor's office is less stressful. The tasks become pretty routine. And there is a steady stream of people to help each day. Now, there are many fields that offer the opportunity of working with people--helping people. What specifically do you like about the medical field?

Tell us which parts you loved about working with people and what parts of the job made it too stressful, and maybe that will help us help you.

I loved the personal interaction I would have with customers or patients.

I had a hard time to keep up with speed of everyone else, and trying to focus on the quality at the same time. I had a difficult time with the comprehension of new material when things were changing.

There are a lot of fields that involve working with people, and many of them don't require special training at all. I'd recommend making a list of the things you enjoy, and then one of the things you don't enjoy, and go over them with your advisor. They may be able to help, or they might refer you to a different advisor entirely, to help you make a decision.
