Hello, I inherited a direct report who I think a good and has a lot of potential.

She listens and take direction and is independent. One thing my boss keeps pointing out is that she recently moved 1.5 hrs away and has a long commute. Because of this she comes in later and leaves earlier. But despite this she gets her work done and is response even she's not in the office. I personally don't have any issues with it since things are getting done. I've told my boss that I'm not a micromanager and I think things are going well. Should I have more expectations from my direct report here? To make things more complicated and exciting is that she's about two months pregnant and has disclosed to me all of her issues with morning sickness. I really feel for her. How should I approach all of this?

You need to decide what is most important. Punching the clock and keeping up appearances or quality and delivery if the work. The answer would seem obvious but many traditional businesses rooted in that old school "butts in the seat " attitude value appearances and adherence to the click value another standard . If the culture at the company is more rooted in that traditional measure, then allowing fir flexibility is courting trouble.

As long as she is getting her work done the time she is there, she is doing well. Unfortunately many managers still have the old world mentality that you must be in the office between 9 and 5 to truly get your work done. Obviously, you and your new report are living in a newer thought process where the quality and timeliness of the work is more important. Keep supporting her and reminding your supervisors that she is getting the work done regardless of whether she is there during the set work hours.
