Why don't women self promote as much as men?

It's performance review season, so women be aware that we tend to be harder on ourselves than men. When possible, use data to support your self-assessment and the performance expectations in your job description or performance plan. Managers take into account this reality when reviewing self-assessments and your potential for bias. " In every setting we explored, we observed a substantial gender gap in self-promotion: Women systematically provided less favorable assessments of their own past performance and potential future ability than equally performing men. And our various study versions revealed that this gender gap was not driven by confidence or by strategic incentives and that it was robust both in the face of ambiguity and under increased transparency." https://hbr.org/2019/12/why-dont-women-self-promote-as-much-as-men

I agree that we tend to be harder on ourselves than men and that we could use data to support our self-assessment. What I did at my most recent job was create a spreadsheet containing what was on my review, and throughout the year, if I had a good example of that specific topic, then I would write it down and date it in my spreadsheet. I couldn’t believe everything I had done by the end of the year. Give yourselves credit for all that you do! I guarantee it’s a lot!

Another great practice is to keep a running list throughout the year rather than trying to compile your accomplishments at the end of the year.
