Question

By saying awesome, terrific, or that's great - shows some excitement around a topic. Is that considered "valley girl"?

gag me with a spoon! I feel like it might show our age but like using “like” It’s a hallmark of our generation

Member of FGB bring up such interesting things to think about. I have used those words in executive meetings before because something great happened and in fact, I used the phrase "that's freaking awesome" about 30 minutes ago in an executive meeting. Why? Because our startup landed a meeting with a huge investment firm in Silicon Valley and not just a random meeting, the investment firm reviewed our deck, likes what we are doing, and wants to chat about investing in us. Frankly that is worthy of an "Awesome!". I think corporate culture has a lot to do with the use of words at work - the more casual the setting, the casual the language. If I was unsure if over-the-top adjectives are accepted, I would see what others are saying around the office, although you won't convince me that "that's great" can't be used everywhere :)

Hi! I am one of those who doesn’t like to hear those words during an executive meeting. For me it sounds sarcastic and informal but of course, I speak only for myself. There are others who would appreaciate it. ?

Proud Valley Girl here! I have a habit of using "awesome" and "fantastic" to show excitement. I don't feel it's bad to be enthusiastic, however I agree with other responses that it depends on the audience.

Agree with Victoria. Also, be cognizant of your audience. It's one thing to use informal language with peers, it's another thing to use it in a formal setting with senior level executives.

Depending on how it's said, it sounds sarcastic to me sometimes.
