I have just agreed to take a new job, passed references stage, signed contract and sent over a new starter form and resigned from current post. The only matter outstanding is to agree a new start date but legally I have to give 3 months notice so there is a set timeframe to work to.
Thing is, I have just seen an advert for a preferred role with a different company. Should I apply or leave well alone? I've never been in this position before. Morally I feel I should leave well alone but I do prefer the other role. My new role I got through an agency so it may also reflect badly on them if I was found out/it went through and my work is that of a professional so I worry it would reflect badly on me. In new role I have 6 month probationary period with one week notice on either side. What would be your advice? Should I leave well alone or apply and just see what happens given I might not get it anyway? Thank you.

Apply! You never know until you try! You don't want regret do you?? The one thing I will say though from an HR stand point, don't say anything about applying. I interviewed someone who flat out told me he already had an offer but was looking to see if someone else would make a better offer. He was very arrogant about it and for that reason alone, I did not go any further than the phone interview with him!

I agree! I have regretted not (quietly) taking the shot.

I'd definitely apply for the other one - if it doesn't work out, you have a guaranteed new job already!
I think you'd end up wondering about the other one if you didn't apply.

I agree with the other commenters. Apply for the other position. If nothing else, it's good experience and you can strengthen your skills. It's always good to know you have options out there. Best of luck!

Yes, I would definitely apply as it's good experience and can help with confidence while you're in limbo between the 2 jobs. I always have to remind myself applying to a job doesn't mean I have to take the job. Maybe my goal is to just get an interview and experience interviewing and that's ok. Good luck!

I agree with the other commenters as well. Apply!! You never know what could be, and maybe the new role would align more with you and your future goals. Good Luck!

Constantly be looking out for your own best interest. No one will do it for you. Long gone are the days of our parents when the company was just as loyal to you as you are to it.
If you make an agreement though and need to back out, do so with class. Avoid burning bridges. Keep them for the future.

Excellent advice! You have to look out for yourself in a respectful way. Nothing is set in stone yet and you need to be excited to go to work each day. You're a better fit for the company when you are passionate about your position. Best of luck to you!
