Is it OK to use POC if you are not a POC?

I recently commented on a LinkedIn post congratulating someone who is of South Asian ancestry on being the first POC leader on a particular board. After I felt as though perhaps I should't have made that comment, is it wrong/weird/inappropriate? I mean this individual is the first non white board member which is awesome.

I should just start out by saying this question may have a variety of answers, which is great! Kudos for asking about a complex topic, as there are definitely different schools of thought on who qualifies as a "POC" [1][2][3], whether it is intersectional or exclusive to only one group of people. With my own ongoing learning journey, I've asked my African American friends and connections what they think on this topic, and I've gotten different answers on whether I qualify for "POC" as a LatinX person. As I'm still not clear on it, nor do I want to unintentionally alienate someone or skew a meaning, I just try to be as specific as possible (i.e. "A well-deserved congrats on earning the new role, and kudos for also being the first person of South Asian heritage on the board!"). Interested in hearing more thoughts on this! No I do not think so. It really would be an organisational achievement.
