I wish I had known this about confidence so much earlier in my career...
For the first ten years of my career, I was afraid that when the CEOs and VPs of Fortune 500s would ask me questions…
I wouldn’t know the answers.
I thought that learning more would make me more confident.
But it didn’t.
Confidence doesn’t depend on what you know. It depends on how you feel.
Confidence is an inner state that you can call up, even when you don’t know the right answer. In fact, you can be confident even when you have the wrong answer.
For too long, I was terrified to talk to leaders. If they asked a question and I didn’t rattle off a quick response, I’d panic. “Why don’t I know that? I should have read up on that! How could I have missed their need for this information? Oh, I’d better not mess up again…”
Do you ever have conversations in your head (or maybe even out loud) like that?
You’re not alone.
Well, now, I know you can be confident under incredible pressure, even if you don’t have a clue what the answers are.
