Resume

All, I have been working in my field for almost 6 years and have tons of relevant experience for jobs I’ve been applying for but I can’t seem to get many interviews. I’m thinking I need a resume rewrite to get notice. Does anyone know of an affordable resume writer for the private or government sectors? Or does anyone have any other advice?

Sarah, The job search process can be so frustrating, right? Women, especially, tend to make up a story in our minds about why we aren't getting interviews...why the interviews aren't turning into offers...why the world doesn't recognize what we have to offer. As one of 23 Master Resume Writers in the world, I am obviously a huge proponent of professional resume writers. The good/great ones can extract information from you you didn't even think about, and present your information in a way that is compelling to the human and passes the ATS. They aren't all created equal, however, so do your due diligence. True story: I recently reviewed a "professionally written" resume that contained 39 errors. If you're interested, feel free to visit my LI profile - there is a pdf on How to Assess Resume Writers on my page. Let me know if you have any follow-up questions!

I would say to use LinkedIn resume builder or find someone who’s a recruiter in the industry and reach out to them to go over your resume. I’m not sure if you have connections with local hiring agencies but they will help too.

What is your resume saying about you?

Hi Sarah, Are you tailoring your resume to each job posting? This doesn't usually mean a complete rewrite every time you apply, it just means tweaking your resume so that it highlights the most relevant information each time. To do this, read the job description and highlight the keywords that stand out as primary duties and qualifications and make sure that when you describe your experience in those areas on your resume, you're using the same wording as in the job posting. This will help make it clear that you have the experience they are looking for. It is also helpful to make sure that you are quantifying your experience. When thinking about all of the duties and accomplishments you have from your past experience, for each bullet point, ask yourself questions that can help uncover ways to quantify what you've done, such as, "how often?" "how many?" "how much?" For example, if you led a team of people, how many people were under you? Adding in those specific details can help hiring managers understand exactly what kind of experience you have, and it can make your resume more memorable.
