Politics

I am hoping to follow a dream of mine and get into Politics. I found this website and it was the first that I found encouraging that I might have hope to get make that possible. I am mother of five, one son who is 22, and four daughters, 2 20 year olds, a 17 year old and a 15 year old. Having daughters have truly changed my views on woman rights. We are all created equal it is about time that changes. It has opened my eyes, making me see that woman need to empower each other. I am a victim of domestic abuse, woman need to have a safe place to go and be able to protect their children. I have family members that are gay, I grew up watching them suffer and struggle I want to stand up for them also. I have a history of family members that have and are currently serving in the military so I support our Military Men and Woman. I truly think that we need to address the mental health and lack of treatment in our country. I work as a nurse. I want to support our frontline workers. If anyone has some tips or advice I would really appreciate it. Like where do I start? How do I start a campaign? Who do I contact? Do I have to get another degree? (I have a degree in Nursing/Science) Was even thinking should I look at changing my name? (people have a hard time pronouncing my first name.) Do I delete social Media? Thanks for looking/reading.

Tamara, Your insight is badly needed in this world. I only got into politics after the 2016 elections, and since have learned a lot about the inner workings and various opportunities. As others mentioned, local is a great way to start. Municipalities often have a committees and commissions you could serve on. If your party doesn't have a presence in your community, then look to getting involved at the county level. Other avenues are available through the causes you support. They may not be party-affiliated, but you could be involved in lobbying on behalf of domestic abuse victims or veterans, and working to pass laws that support those groups. Before launching your own campaign, it's important you get your feet wet, become familiar with the system, and build your connections. You will need people to support you, and that comes from putting time in working for other candidates and building a positive reputation. Happy to chat if you have more questions!

Tamara , a lot of women I know who start in politics do it at the local level like Jennifer said. That might be school board or village/city boards. There are a number of training programs, both statewide and national that help women learn about how to run for office. Some are party affiliated and others are non-partisan. I would do a internet search for this training. I would be with the pandemic, many have gone online. Good luck and thank you for getting involved!

Get involved on the community level socially, culturally and in government. Learn as much as you can and make connections too. With the Holidays around the corner, there should be plenty of opportunities to meet people.

I wouldn’t change your name or necessarily even get another degree. I would start networking at a local level in politics, so to the meetings, meet people become a regular face at your party’s political headquarters. All those things and get ready for the next race.
